Literacy in Literary Analysis

The idea of a story heavily impacting an individual for the first time is so magical. It brought me back to the first text that I ever felt passionate about. The accessibility to this content, to me, means providing opportunity. "Content reading that supports content learning provides opportunities for students to develop their understanding" (Lattimer xix). Providing accessibility to your students can even look like providing them with texts that they can connect with. These may be texts that are culturally relevant to THEIR backgrounds. This can really go for ELL learners, finding texts in various languages that speak to their backgrounds in a place where maybe they don't have a ton of media surrounding them that does speak to them.

Another way this could be relevant is by allowing them time to practice crucial reading skills daily as a foundation for the building blocks that may come into play while independently reading. "We have so much to tell students and share with them. However, are we affording students enough time daily to practice these crucial communication skills" (Alber 1).

Practicing these skills acts as a bridge to be literate in content learning. "Reading is not separate from content learning but intimately connected" (Lattimer xxi). To be literate in all of these content areas starts here.

I want to more about what kind of daily skills we can use to bridge this gap. I want to know how we can keep students motivated so they can find texts that may play a part in telling their own stories based on their backgrounds. How do we keep passionate readers going?
